Hi.

A collection of thoughts, images, and experiences worth remembering. To make life more purposeful, productive, and filled with joy.

Thoughts on Martin Luther King Jr Day

I was reflecting on Martin Luther King Jr’s life and legacy as we approached the MLK Holiday. Though the day has now passed, I thought I would share my thoughts with you in this space. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, can be a poignant time for us, as Charlotte Mason homeschooling families, to reflect on the profound messages of dignity, respect, and love that both Dr. King and Charlotte Mason emphasized in their teachings.

Dr. King, in his relentless pursuit of equality and justice, beautifully and courageously aligned with Mason's principle that "children are born persons." He believed, as do we, in the inherent worth of every individual, irrespective of their background. This belief forms a cornerstone of our educational philosophy, where each child is seen, respected, and nurtured as a unique individual.

In one of his most inspiring quotes, Dr. King said, “Intelligence plus character—that is the goal of true education.” This resonates deeply with Mason's philosophy where education is not just about academic achievement but the formation of character.

In our homeschooling journey, this message takes on a practical form. We choose literature that reflects diverse voices and experiences, encouraging our children to see the world through others' eyes. We engage in discussions about respect, justice, and dignity, drawing parallels between historical figures like Dr. King and our current world.

As we commemorate this day, let's reaffirm our commitment to nurturing our children's minds and souls. Let's teach them to value every person's dignity, to stand up for what is right, and to view the world with empathy and respect.

Dr. King's vision and Charlotte Mason's educational principles guide us in this endeavor. They remind us that in nurturing the individual soul of each child, we are contributing to a world that values respect, love, and dignity for all.

As we honor Dr. King's legacy, let's carry forward his message in our homes and communities. Let's continue to believe in the power of education to change the world, one child at a time.
